WHAT IS NANO EMULSIFIED THC AND WHY DO I CARE?
The old expression “oil and water don’t mix” has described a problem cannabis consumers have struggled with for a long time. Because THC extracted from cannabis is an oil, it is difficult to produce edibles with THC oil that can be ingested and deliver the THC effectively to your brain. The typical edibles use decarboxylated cannabis oil and the cannabinoids within the oil travel through the patient’s liver to reach the blood stream and the brain to take effect. The one to two hours that such process needs to take place is one of the great frustrations for patients. The delay of the onset of effects can result in anxiety, and excess dosing.
The nano emulsification process allows the THC oil to be mixed with an emulsifier and uses high energy to reduce the particle size to “nano” sized particles. This results in a water soluble, bio-available cannabinoid that can go directly from your stomach into your blood stream. This reduces the onset time to a matter of a few minutes and enables much smaller doses to achieve similar effects to traditional edibles. Typical nano dosing of 6mg per dose in drinks is developing in some markets where nano has been introduced. A typical bottle of tincture would allow patients to dose by mixing the tincture in drinks of their choice. Nano emulsifying is a relatively new process in the context of cannabis use but is becoming adopted by edible producers to produce “fast-acting” edibles.
At Robinsons of Maine, we have worked with our friends at CBW Labs in Fryeburg to use CO2 extraction to produce full spectrum cannabis oil. CBW then produces the nano-emulsified solution with ultrasound and emulsifiers. The result is a shelf-stable solution for delivery of the bio-available cannabis oil extracted from our various strains. We believe this process allows us to preserve the attributes of the respective strains that we have processed in this manner to deliver the entourage effect of the full spectrum oil, but in a convenient edible form.
